At Shoes & Sox, we believe that inclusion goes beyond awareness—it’s about real understanding. That’s why we’re proud to join Aspect in acknowledging and celebrating World Autism Understanding Day 2025 (2 April). Since 2018, we’ve partnered with Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), whose purpose, “a different brilliant®,” celebrates the strengths, interests, and aspirations of people on the autism spectrum.

Autism is a part of everyday life for an estimated 1 in every 40 people in Australia. While autism presents differently for every individual, research shows that boys are three to four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. These statistics highlight the importance of listening to Autistic people, reflecting, learning, and taking steps towards a more understanding and accessible world. This year, Shoes & Sox has taken another step towards inclusion by introducing a Visual Story on our website. In addition to the before and after-hours appointments we offer, this tool helps individuals and families prepare for their visit to Shoes & Sox by providing clear, step-by-step communication on what to expect. We recognise that unfamiliar environments can be overwhelming, and this initiative is designed to help reduce anxiety and create a smoother, more comfortable experience for everyone.

Inclusion starts with listening. Simple, everyday actions such as, adapting communication styles, being patient, and creating sensory-friendly spaces can go a long way in making the world more accommodating for Autistic individuals. This World Autism Understanding Day let’s move beyond just awareness. Let’s commit to learning, listening, and creating environments where Autistic people can thrive.
